Floodplain Management

No one strategy is perfect for all situations at all times. Because rivers serve so many functions, few stretches of water are devoted exclusively to irrigation, drinking water, recreation, waterfront development, and so on. Managing streams must include the flexibility needed to accommodate future changes. Several decision-making tools can be used to guide discussions. Tool sheets are included here to help you quantify the effect of your proposed strategies on the flood characteristics, the consequences of your strategies to your site and others, and your capabilities. Both current and future costs should be considered before making a decision.
